“Ambitious Cities” is an audio from this year’s RSA ‘Moving Pictures’ brief, spoken by Kate Raworth.
I illustrated and animated in response to the audio, making a motion graphics piece, with the aim to make the information spoken more accessible to a young audience of children, teaching them the importance of creating a sustainable, and inclusive environment that accepts and cares for the planet and others.

Ambitious Cities Character Design by Abbie McHale

All illustrations featured in this motion graphics piece were entirely designed by myself using adobe illustrator. When designing my characters it was important to me that they presented themselves as a diverse group to fairly reflect society in the real world, however it was equally important to me to make sure my characters were not performing to racial/gender stereotypes. Which is why I kept the same visual language for the facial features throughout.

Hair coverings are often associated with religions and these religions are often associated with specific ethnic groups, and I wanted to show that this isn't a deciding factor, but it was also important to not to just include someone with light-skin with the headdress as that would feel like I was trying to whitewash a culture.

Cartoonists often given their female characters exaggerated eyelashes to differentiate between the genders, but it was important for me to also give some of my male presenting characters the winged eyelashes to show that gender is performative and there are men who do also wear makeup.
